Russia imposes restrictions at the border with Estonia / FSB limits movement and access on the Narva River

Russia has introduced new restrictions in the Kingisepp and Slantsy districts of the Leningrad region, near the border with Estonia. The measures, announced by the Federal Security Service (FSB), are in effect until September 26 and restrict movement in certain border areas, hunting, the carrying of weapons, and travel on the Narva River.

The FSB says the restrictions are intended to prevent illegal border crossings and clandestine migration, as well as to protect aquatic biological resources. Estonia’s police and Border Guard had been informed of the decision in advance, but Tallinn did not receive an official notification from Russia.

The measures were announced during the same period in which a Jordanian citizen allegedly crossed illegally from Russia into Estonia, crossing the temporary control line on the Narva River. The man was detained and taken to the detention center in Narva.

The situation is being monitored against the backdrop of warnings from European intelligence services about an intensification of possible Russian hybrid actions, including sabotage, provocations, and influence campaigns. EU foreign ministers are discussing a coordinated response in the event of attacks that cause casualties among European or NATO citizens.
