The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, confirmed that Spain will join NATO's program for the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine, announcing the decision upon his arrival at the European Council meeting in Brussels. This was communicated to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a recent phone conversation. Sanchez explained that the Spanish government has analyzed NATO's proposal and decided to participate, reaffirming Spain's commitment to the Atlantic alliance and support for Ukraine.
He also mentioned that Spain will continue to provide humanitarian aid and diversified assistance to Ukraine, including the delivery of generators to help with the power shortage. Additionally, Sanchez responded to criticisms from American President Donald Trump regarding Spain's defense spending, emphasizing that the country meets and respects its commitments to NATO and that it has increased its defense budget from 0.9% to 2% of GDP. He stated that Spain is a reliable partner within the alliance and that it focuses on developing the necessary capabilities to address common challenges.
