The Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, declared that his country has decided to boycott this year's edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, emphasizing Spain's 'commitment' to human rights and international law. Alongside Spain, Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Slovenia have withdrawn from the competition, resulting in only 35 countries participating in Eurovision 2026, the lowest number since the format was expanded in 2004. Sanchez stated that, although they will not be present in Vienna, their action is a sign of the conviction that they are on the 'right side of history.' The Prime Minister emphasized that Eurovision, created to promote peace, cannot ignore the situation in Gaza and Lebanon, asserting that silence is not an option. Instead of broadcasting the gala, the public broadcaster RTVE will air 'The House of Music,' an alternative program.
