The United States allegedly pressured Israel to launch a unilateral operation against Iran before the elections for the U.S. Congress, sources cited by the Maariv newspaper on Saturday said. The information was subsequently denied by two American officials and one Israeli official.
According to the article, the administration in Washington allegedly sought for Israel to assume the political risks of a possible military operation instead of President Donald Trump. American officials allegedly considered that Israel might be interested in attacking Iran before its own elections, while an American military action before the midterm elections would have had negative consequences for Trump.
Earlier reports suggested that Trump was considering resuming attacks against Iran. However, Maariv's sources claim that Washington's initial proposal was limited to requesting that Israel take action. The United States has since abandoned this request, at least temporarily.
After the article was published, the American and Israeli officials denied to Channel 12 that the United States had asked Israel to attack Iran before the elections.
