US President Donald Trump confirmed on Tuesday that the United States military had launched new attacks on Iran, shortly before the midterm elections. The target was a recently built air defense system constructed by the Iranian authorities, according to the dpa and AFP agencies.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump said that the United States had monitored the construction of the air defense infrastructure for approximately two months and had struck it immediately after its completion. The US president described the operation as a small-scale attack and stated that it had been carried out “very easily.”
US media reported that the attacks targeted the Iranian island of Qeshm, located in the Strait of Hormuz. According to this information, a position of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on the island was reportedly struck after a missile was launched from that location at an American aircraft.
The operation comes amid military tensions between Washington and Tehran and the approaching midterm elections in the United States. Estimates point to losses for Trump’s Republicans, including against the backdrop of the war with Iran. At the beginning of October, the US president had stated that he would not order attacks on Iran before the vote.
