Robert Fico, the Prime Minister of Slovakia and leader of the populist Smer party, stated that Slovakia will reject any proposal from the European Union that would require the country to financially contribute to the Ukrainian army. In a letter addressed to the President of the European Council, António Costa, Fico emphasized that Slovakia will not support solutions that would finance Ukraine's military expenses, considering that the conflict in Ukraine does not have a military solution and that the EU's strategy is wrong.
He also mentioned that the use of frozen Russian assets for military support could affect peace efforts. Fico reaffirmed that Slovakia provides assistance in non-military areas, such as humanitarian aid, supplying electricity and gas to Ukraine. His position contradicts the majority of EU leaders but aligns with Viktor Orbán, the Prime Minister of Hungary. Fico respected the right of other EU states to decide how to support Ukraine.
