Sanae Takaichi has been appointed Tuesday as Japan's prime minister, becoming the first woman to hold this position, due to a parliamentary coalition formed after last-minute negotiations. At 64 years old, Takaichi was elected by the lower house of Parliament and will be officially received by Emperor Naruhito. Although she won the presidency of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Takaichi faces a complicated political situation, as the LDP recently lost its majority in Parliament due to a financial scandal.

To secure her election, she formed an alliance with the Japan Innovation Party (Ishin). Takaichi, a fan of Margaret Thatcher, promised a government with an increased number of women, in contrast to the current executive. She also addresses issues related to women's health but supports a conservative stance on gender equality. Takaichi will face major challenges, including demographic decline and the need to revive the economy, requiring support from other parties to pass her laws.
