Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, stated that the return of Great Britain to the European Union is the "ultimate goal" he is pursuing, highlighting the negative impact of Brexit on the economy.
In an interview with The Observer, Khan urged Labour leader Keir Starmer to be more ambitious in rebuilding relations with the EU, stating that Brexit was an act of economic self-harm. He expressed a desire to be part of a customs union and a single market, arguing that current geopolitical changes offer better negotiation opportunities than in the past.
Khan won a third term in 2024 and intends to run for a fourth, maintaining a consistently pro-EU position. Prime Minister Starmer has also begun to explore new agreements with the EU, while at the same time maintaining the government's "red lines."
Although supporters of a customs union believe it would reduce bureaucracy, critics fear it would limit Great Britain's ability to strike global trade deals. The issue of Brexit remains a central topic in British politics, and the Labour Party presents itself as having a position that reflects public opinion.
