The spokesperson for the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, stated that Russia is waging a war against Ukraine to prevent long-range attacks, in the context of recent Ukrainian drone raids on St. Petersburg. On the night of June 2 to 3, drones attacked the Leningrad region, and air defense systems shot down 59 drones, but strikes were recorded in St. Petersburg, including at a strategic oil terminal.

The resulting fire was visible at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, where leaders from over 100 countries are expected to participate. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that important targets on Russian territory were hit, highlighting the progress of the Ukrainian sanctions plan. He expressed hope that the war could be concluded before winter, urging Western partners to increase pressure on the Kremlin.
