The Kremlin warned on Monday that Ukraine will pay a “price” for the attacks launched in recent months against Russian territory, as Moscow’s forces continue to strike targets in Ukraine. The statement was made by spokesman Dmitry Peskov, quoted by Reuters, amid uncertainty over the resumption of peace negotiations.
Peskov argued that the Ukrainian attacks, including the drone attack on Moscow during Russia’s parliamentary elections and the attack on the city of Saint Petersburg in June, had not changed Moscow’s position but had prompted retaliation. President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that Russia was ready to resume negotiations with Kyiv after the vote, but that it would continue to assess its own interests.
The conflict has lasted for four and a half years, and proposals for resolving it remain, according to Putin, on the negotiating table. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky proposed an “energy ceasefire”: Kyiv would halt attacks on Russian energy infrastructure if Moscow did the same. The proposal is expected to be conveyed to Russia by the American administration, following Zelensky’s meeting with Donald Trump in New York, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
