Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accuses Russia of expanding its attacks on civilian infrastructure in order to cause as much disruption as possible to people’s daily lives. The statement was made on Friday after a Russian drone struck a business center in Kyiv, killing four people and damaging a data center.
Another attack killed a 14-year-old boy, whom Israel’s Foreign Ministry announced was an Israeli citizen. Russia confirmed that it had targeted a data center, claiming it was used by Ukraine’s military intelligence services.
Zelensky said that companies, data centers and internet providers are being attacked, and that “all ordinary life” has become a target. Approximately 100,000 households in Kyiv and the surrounding region were left without internet access following the attacks, while some companies are transferring their data from affected servers abroad.
The disruptions were also felt in the city of Lutsk, where electronic displays at public transport stops were not working. Local officials attributed the situation to damage caused to data centers in Kyiv.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, warned that the attacks could affect the transmission of alerts about missiles and drones, information essential to saving lives. Ukrainian authorities expect further local outages and possible increases in internet tariffs amid repair costs. Moscow has recently intensified its attacks on energy and railway infrastructure ahead of the cold season.
