One year and a half after the tragedy in December 2024, Russia officially admitted that the Embraer 190 aircraft of Azerbaijan Airlines was shot down by its air defense systems, in an 'unintentional action'. The incident occurred during a Baku-Grozny flight, resulting in 38 deaths among the 67 passengers and crew members. The plane attempted an emergency landing in Aktau after it was denied permission to land in Grozny and Makhachkala.
The official acknowledgment came after months of diplomatic tensions, during which the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, accused Russia. In October 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin admitted responsibility and accepted discussions regarding compensation for the victims. This acknowledgment was influenced by constant pressures from Azerbaijan, significantly affecting bilateral relations.
