The Republic of Moldova will declare an employee of the Russian Embassy in Chișinău persona non grata after a drone loaded with explosives crashed Friday near homes in Telenești District. Moldovan authorities described the incident as a serious violation of the country’s sovereignty and security.
President Maia Sandu said the Russian-made Geran attack drone entered the airspace of the Republic of Moldova and fell near homes and an energy facility. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Chișinău announced the diplomatic measure, as authorities consider the incident a direct threat to the population.
Moscow rejected the accusations. Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, argued that the drone’s Russian origin had not been proven and called Chișinău’s decision an “unfounded pretext.” Russia warned that the expulsion would not go unanswered and promised a firm response.
The Ministry of Defense in Chișinău reported two violations of national airspace between October 16 and 23. Authorities advise citizens to call 112 if they spot drones or suspicious fragments and not to touch or move such objects.
