Donald Trump invited Putin to the G20 summit in Miami. Marco Rubio hopes that the Russian leader will accept the invitation

U.S. President Donald Trump invited his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to a G20 summit in December in the United States, as Washington is encountering difficulties in persuading Russia and Ukraine to end the war, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Wednesday, AFP reports.

Rubio stated that the problems and differences can be resolved only through direct meetings and expressed hope that Putin would accept the invitation. The Russian president’s participation in the G20 could create a new opportunity for diplomatic dialogue amid the war in Ukraine.

At the same time, the head of U.S. diplomacy urged Moscow and Kyiv to accept a limited ceasefire in the energy sector. Rubio specified that such an agreement would not end the conflict, but could provide a platform for negotiating a broader agreement. According to him, both sides have expressed interest in such a mutual cessation of attacks on energy infrastructure.

Ukraine has been requesting a complete or sectoral ceasefire for several months, but the Kremlin has consistently rejected the proposal, arguing that a definitive agreement to end the war is necessary. After Tuesday’s meeting with Donald Trump, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Kyiv and Washington want the war to end before winter.
