The Kremlin, after Donald Trump’s invitation to Vladimir Putin for the G20 summit in Miami: “No decision has been made yet”

The Kremlin announced Thursday that it will analyze the invitation extended by U.S. President Donald Trump to his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to participate in the G20 summit scheduled to take place in Miami, United States, on December 14 and 15. Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov specified that no decision has yet been made.

“It is premature to talk about this at this time. No decision has yet been made. We certainly appreciate this kind invitation, consider it important, and it will be analyzed and coordinated, after which an appropriate decision will be made,” Peskov said when asked what the two presidents might discuss.

The invitation was made public on Wednesday by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, after his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, held in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Peskov said that Moscow attaches “great importance” to the invitation and that it will be analyzed and coordinated before a decision is made.

The summit will take place in the context of the war in Ukraine, in which Russia has been involved for more than four and a half years. The United States holds the rotating G20 presidency this year, of the forum that brings together the main developed and emerging economies, including France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, countries that support Ukraine.

Since returning to the White House, Trump has attempted to mediate an end to the conflict, without significant progress. The Kremlin continues to claim that it is seeking a peaceful resolution, not a temporary ceasefire.
