Marco Rubio announced that the US will invite Vladimir Putin to the G20 summit held in December in Miami

The United States will invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to the G20 summit scheduled for December in Miami, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on September 23, after meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

Rubio said Putin's participation would provide an opportunity for the Russian leader to hold discussions with both US President Donald Trump and the other heads of state and government of the group. “We hope he will accept the invitation. We remain open to dialogue,” the US official said.

Russia remains a member of the G20, an international forum dedicated to economic cooperation. Moscow was excluded from the G8 in 2014 after the illegal annexation of Crimea.

If he attends, Putin would make his second visit to the United States during Trump's second term. The first took place in August 2025, in Alaska, for negotiations on the war in Ukraine, but the talks did not result in major progress. Trump later said he would like to host Putin at the G20 summit.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he is prepared to meet Putin in Miami.
