Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that it would be 'logical' for Armenia to organize a referendum to decide on joining the European Union, after the country hosted a European summit for the first time.
Armenia, a former Soviet republic, suspended its participation in the Russian-led CSTO military alliance in 2024, dissatisfied with Moscow's lack of intervention in the conflict with Azerbaijan. Additionally, Yerevan has signed security memorandums to move closer to European and transatlantic partnerships, thereby reducing dependence on Russia. Putin emphasized that a referendum would allow Armenian citizens to express their choice, and Russia would adapt its policy accordingly. His comments were made after the summit of the European Political Community, where Armenia hosted European leaders, including Ukrainian President Zelensky. Russia reacted by summoning the Armenian ambassador to express its dissatisfaction with these events.
