The European Union announced on Tuesday that it is interested in analyzing a possible application for membership from Armenia, which wishes to establish closer ties with the West and distance itself from Moscow's influence. The spokesperson for the European Commission, Paula Pinho, emphasized that Yerevan's interest in joining the EU reflects the attraction that the Union holds for its citizens.

The Armenian Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, stated that his country could soon submit the official application for membership. Russia, on the other hand, has expressed dissatisfaction with Armenia's European ambitions, considering it part of its sphere of influence. Moscow insists on organizing a referendum regarding Armenia's membership in the EU, which it sees as incompatible with remaining in the Eurasian Economic Union. Pashinyan responded that a referendum would only make sense after assessing the feasibility of membership, emphasizing that Armenia must first submit the application. This decision by Armenia has strained relations with Moscow, which has imposed sanctions, including a ban on the import of Armenian agricultural products.
