A Learjet 60 private jet carrying nine people crashed Sunday afternoon in a residential area near Palm Beach, Florida. All occupants of the aircraft were killed, and the plane exploded on impact, triggering a major fire.
The aircraft had taken off from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was headed to the Bahamas. The accident occurred near Military Trail, between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North. The impact severely damaged the road and created a crater in the asphalt.
The plane was registered to a Delaware limited liability company and was listed online for charter flights. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched an investigation to determine the causes of the crash.
At the time of the accident, isolated storms were present in the area, and the aircraft had passed through a storm cell several minutes before beginning its descent. Investigators have not yet determined whether the weather contributed to the tragedy. The accident is the second-deadliest in the United States this year, after the crash in June in Butler, Missouri, which killed 12 people.
