In the run-up to the Polish presidential elections, Karol Nawrocki, the candidate of the Law and Justice (PiS) party, has demanded €1.3 trillion in reparations from Germany for damage caused during World War II. Nawrocki, who won 29.5% of the vote in the first round, will run in the second round against Warsaw mayor Rafal Trzaskowski. Although the demand for reparations has not been pursued by the current governing coalition, Poland's relations with Germany have been strained by the demand. The German chancellor said the issue is considered legally closed, but left open the possibility of reconciliation talks.
