The 66-year-old pilot of the small aircraft that crashed into the CITIC Tower in Beijing on Friday had a history of psychological issues, including insomnia and anxiety, and reportedly exhibited suicidal intentions, according to Chinese authorities. The accident occurred before 6:00 PM when the aircraft collided with the 528-meter skyscraper, resulting in the pilot's death and injuring 13 people. The pilot, divorced and originally from Beijing, obtained a sport pilot license in 2021 and a private pilot license in 2024. Investigators found entries in his journal indicating suicidal intent. The aircraft took off from an airfield in the Pinggu district, and the pilot left the authorized flight area, interrupting communications with air traffic controllers. Authorities continue investigations to clarify the circumstances of the tragedy.
