The collapse of a school roof in Peshawar, in northwestern Pakistan, caused the deaths of 17 students and a teacher. The victims were transported to Lady Reading Hospital, but were declared dead on arrival, said Mohammad Asim, a representative of the medical facility.
All the students who lost their lives were under 13 years old. Following the incident, more than 12 other people were injured and received medical care at the same facility. Authorities have not yet communicated the severity of the injuries or the current condition of the survivors.
The cause of the collapse is not yet known. It is unclear whether the roof gave way due to structural problems, the condition of the building, or other factors. Pakistani authorities are to determine the circumstances of the tragedy and investigate the conditions under which the accident occurred, according to Reuters.
