Armed attack at a school in Slovakia / At least one person has died after a student attacked his classmates and teachers

A eighth-grade student attacked several people with a sharp object on Tuesday at an elementary school in Staškovo, Slovakia. A 61-year-old female teacher died from the injuries she sustained, while a child and another woman were injured. Police detained the attacker and are conducting an investigation.

Two ground ambulances and two rescue helicopters responded at the scene, according to the Operations Center of Slovakia’s Emergency Medical Service. The rescue operation was confirmed by spokesperson Petra Klimešová.

A child in critical condition was airlifted to the hospital in Martin. A 44-year-old woman, injured by a stab wound to the chest, was transported to the hospital in Žilina. Doctors were unable to save a 61-year-old female teacher, whose injuries were incompatible with life.

Authorities are continuing the investigation to establish precisely how the attack occurred and the circumstances in which the student used the sharp object.
