A 14-year-old student opened fire on Monday morning at a school in Aubagne, in France’s Bouches-du-Rhône department, injuring the institution’s principal and a teacher. The attack took place at around 10:30 a.m. at Joseph-Lakanal Middle School.
The teenager, a ninth-grade student at the school, entered the premises with a 12-gauge shotgun hidden in a guitar case. According to authorities, he first shot at the 53-year-old principal, who was wounded by shotgun pellets in the thigh and back. He subsequently shot a 37-year-old teacher in the thigh and fired another shot in the corridor.
The attacker was restrained by a school employee and later arrested by law enforcement officers. The prefecture announced that a third person suffered minor injuries, while several students in a state of shock are receiving psychological support.
Authorities said the teenager was not previously known for delinquency or radicalization. Education Minister Edouard Geffray called the attack “unacceptable” and announced that he was travelling to the scene together with the interior minister.
