Armed attack in front of a high school in Turkey / At least eight students were injured - UPDATE

A student opened fire in front of his high school in Manisa province, located in western Turkey, on Tuesday, injuring at least eight other students, television station NTV reported, Reuters reports. Two of those injured were in critical condition, NTV said. The attacker was apprehended, the local governor’s office announced.

UPDATE The number of injured has risen to eight, after the initial tally indicated that at least four people had been wounded.

The attack took place as students were arriving at school. According to HaberTurk channel, the assailant used a rifle to fire at them. The governor’s office of Manisa province confirmed the incident and announced that police and medical teams had been sent to the scene.

Authorities have not yet communicated the motive for the attack and have provided no information about the victims’ condition or the suspect’s detention. Investigations are ongoing.

The incident comes after two other armed attacks at schools in Turkey this year. In April, a 14-year-old student killed nine students and teachers and injured 13 other people at a school in Kahramanmaraș province before being shot by police. A day earlier, 16 people, mostly students, were injured in an attack at a high school in Şanlıurfa province. The suspect later committed suicide.
