A bomb attack killed 15 people and injured more than 50 at a mosque in northwestern Pakistan

At least 15 people were killed and more than 50 were injured in a bombing carried out during prayers at a mosque in the city of Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, in northwestern Pakistan. The attack took place in an area affected by violence and located near the border with Afghanistan.

According to information cited by DPA and Al Jazeera, a car loaded with explosives was driven at high speed toward the entrance of the mosque, which was located within a police headquarters compound

The victims were transported to a hospital in Kohat, said Dr. Tahir Shah. The death toll could rise, as several of the injured are in critical condition.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack. An affiliate of the Islamic State group and the Pakistani Taliban, known by the acronym TTP, operate in the region; both have been involved in repeated attacks on security forces.

Violence has intensified in the border area in recent years. Islamabad accuses the Taliban authorities in Kabul of allowing militants to operate from Afghan territory, accusations rejected by Afghanistan. Tensions have even led to exchanges of strikes across the border.
