At least seven people were killed and another 10 were injured on Friday after two armed men opened fire during a funeral held at Hamoud Church in Jordan’s Karak province. The attack took place as dozens of people took part in the funeral procession.
According to state television channel Al-Mamlaka, cited by Reuters, the suspects got out of a vehicle and fired at those attending for several minutes. A witness said that one attacker had a rifle and the other a pistol.
Security forces went to the church and began pursuing the suspects. So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and the authorities have not announced who may be responsible.
The incident is unusual for Jordan, a country considered relatively stable in the region. Christians make up a minority of the population, but the country is home to several important biblical sites visited by pilgrims from around the world. The attack comes amid rising regional tensions and an intensification of Iranian attacks on Jordan this year.
