Two people were killed, while another 35 were injured in a shooting that took place on Sunday, at around 1:25 a.m., on Pine Street in the city of Vienna, Georgia, during a party attended by more than 1,000 people. The incident occurred during the weekend dedicated to the Dooly County high school’s homecoming festivities, but the event was not organized by the educational institution.
Dooly County deputies were patrolling near the party when they heard gunshots. When police arrived, several people with gunshot wounds were found, and two victims were pronounced dead at the scene. The two young men were identified as 21-year-old Jaquevion Jackson and 23-year-old Macaleb Jackson.
Investigators determined that shots had been fired in at least two areas approximately one block apart. Sheriff Craig Peavy said that more than 50 shots were heard. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, most of the 35 injured people, ranging in age from 14 to 51, were struck by bullets. Others were injured while trying to flee.
There are currently no arrested suspects. Authorities have not determined the motive for the attack or the number of people who fired the shots. Vienna City Hall said it had not issued a permit for the party. The investigation is ongoing, and schools in Dooly County will be open on Monday with additional security measures.
