Ten people, including three children, were rescued Thursday morning after the first three floors of a seven-story building partially collapsed in the Maltepe district of Istanbul, Türkiye, at around 5:40 a.m. Two people were found dead, while emergency teams continue the search, according to Türkiye Today.
Istanbul Governor Davut Gül said that none of those rescued were in critical condition.
“Our priority is to carry out search and rescue operations safely and as quickly as possible, provide accommodation for the residents we evacuated, and ensure that the injured receive medical care,” the governor said.
The upper floors, which remain standing, continue to pose a risk of collapse, so the response is being carried out in a controlled manner. Nearby streets have been closed, and the area has been cordoned off.
Authorities also evacuated neighboring buildings deemed vulnerable. The cause of the collapse is currently unknown, and an administrative and judicial investigation will also examine possible irregularities regarding the building’s authorization.
