Two people died and another was injured on Thursday in Göreme, in Turkey’s Cappadocia region, after a landslide caused by heavy rain broke and brought down a rock column. The accident occurred near an open-air museum, one of the region’s major tourist attractions.
The incident took place at 3:15 p.m. local time, or 2:15 p.m. Romanian time. Nevşehir Governor Hüseyin Kök announced that rescue teams had found the bodies of two people, while the injured victim was taken to hospital.
According to local authorities, the collapse was caused by falling rocks following a landslide. The area was immediately closed to the public, and search and rescue operations are continuing. Rescue teams are using all available resources to inspect the site and remove any potential risks.
Cappadocia is one of Turkey’s main tourist destinations and is known for its spectacular volcanic formations, called “fairy chimneys.” These rock columns were formed by volcanic activity and erosion over time.
