The NISAR satellite (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar), launched on July 30, 2025, has discovered that Mexico City is sinking at an alarming rate of up to 35.5 centimeters per year. This problem, known since 1925, is caused by the city's construction on an aquifer, and the pumping of groundwater and the weight of urbanization compress the sedimentary layers. NISAR monitors ground changes with an accuracy of under 1 cm, having the ability to detect land subsidence in difficult areas. Radar images show the affected areas, with blue representing significant subsidence. With constant coverage, NISAR is expected to bring new important discoveries.
