An international team of researchers began a nearly six-week expedition in Greenland on Thursday, using robots, drones, and autonomous submarines to study the impact of melting ice sheets on ocean currents and global climate. On board the RSS Sir David Attenborough are approximately 80 researchers. The mission, part of the GIANT program, is funded with £20 million by the UK Agency for Advanced Research and Innovation.

The main objective is to determine the melting rate of glaciers in contact with the ocean and to assess the influence of freshwater on the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). This expedition will use advanced equipment, including the autonomous submarine 'Boaty McBoatface', to collect essential data on the interaction of glaciers with the ocean. The information obtained will contribute to improving climate models and monitoring the effects of climate change on the global environment.
