The Nigerian army announced on Thursday that it killed more than 50 Boko Haram militants in response to drone attacks on military bases in the northeast of the country. The attacks occurred simultaneously in the states of Borno and Yobe, launched from northern Cameroon and from the village of Katarko, located in Yobe. The army spokesman, Sani Uba, stated that ground troops, supported by aviation, continue to pursue over 70 injured militants. Last month, Boko Haram killed at least 60 people in a nighttime attack on the village of Darul Jamal.

The jihadist group Boko Haram, active since 2009, fights for the imposition of radical Islamic law. The decade-long conflict has led to the deaths of approximately 35,000 civilians and the displacement of over 2 million people. After the death of leader Abubakar Shekau in 2021, the group split into two factions, one of which is supported by the Islamic State group. Recently, the U.S. approved a $346 million arms sale to enhance security in Nigeria.
