The king of New Zealand's Maori people, Tuheitia Paki, has died at the age of 69.

Kiingi Tuheitia was a respected Maori leader, succeeding his mother in 2006. Although the role of Maori monarch does not involve political authority, Tuheitia was known for his activism on environmental and animal rights issues. His death has been mourned by officials and the funeral is expected to last at least five days.
