Norway’s Princess Astrid has died at the age of 94, two weeks after her brother, King Harald V

Princess Astrid of Norway, the elder sister of the late King Harald V, died on Friday, September 11, at the age of 94, the Royal Palace in Oslo announced. The death occurred exactly two weeks after her brother’s death, who passed away on August 28, at the age of 89, after a reign of more than 35 years.

Princess Astrid made her last public appearance on Wednesday, at the funeral of King Harald V. She attended the ceremony in a wheelchair, after her appearances had become increasingly rare in recent years. In August, Norwegian doctors implanted a pacemaker in her, just as they had for her brother.

“Throughout her long life, Princess Astrid represented the Royal House in a warm manner and with a strong sense of duty,” King Haakon VIII said, according to the Royal Palace’s statement.

With the death of Princess Astrid, the last of the three children of King Olav V, who reigned between 1957 and 1991, has passed away. The throne of Norway is currently occupied by Haakon VIII, the son of Harald V, who became king after his father’s death.
