A 60-year-old inmate died on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at the Ploiești–Târgșorul Nou Women's Prison after her health rapidly deteriorated. The woman was under the care of the facility's medical office for multiple health problems.
According to the prison, medical staff were notified of the worsening of her condition and immediately went to the scene. The inmate was experiencing respiratory failure, so first aid was provided and oxygen was administered. As her condition continued to worsen, the Prahova County Ambulance Service was called via 112.
The woman subsequently went into cardiorespiratory arrest. The prison's medical staff and the ambulance crew performed resuscitation procedures and used a defibrillator, but she was pronounced dead despite their efforts. Her family was informed.
Following the incident, the leadership of the National Administration of Penitentiaries, the prosecutor from the Ploiești District Court, and the judge supervising deprivation of liberty were notified. Police are conducting checks to establish all the circumstances, while the ANP has ordered an investigation by a mixed team at the prison level.
