New officials, including a former prosecutor and former police officers, have been sentenced by a court in the Dominican Republic to prison terms of up to 10 years for bribery, following a scheme that erased the criminal records of approximately 17,000 offenders. This allowed the previous convictions of criminals and rapists to not be evident in employment checks or official documents. Three other individuals were acquitted due to lack of evidence, and the court also ordered the dissolution of a technology firm involved in the network. The case was uncovered in 2022.
