Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, has begun developing artificial intelligence-powered humanoid robots as part of its strategy to expand into robotics. The first prototype, internally named Max, was built in approximately three months together with Chinese manufacturer Fourier, and an internal demonstration took place at the end of August.
The robot is approximately 1.5 meters tall and weighs around 48 kilograms. It is equipped with an Nvidia Jetson Thor processor and five-fingered hands capable of manipulating small objects. Max can recognize voices from five meters away, interpret gestures from three meters away, and imitate facial expressions.
Meta has already begun work on Max 2, which is expected to have improved hands, sensors for climbing stairs, and a projector. The company says the partnership with Fourier is intended for internal research and that it does not currently plan to commercialize the prototypes.
The initiative is part of the robotics division established by Meta within Reality Labs in February 2025. The company is developing both hardware and sensors, as well as software based on Llama artificial intelligence models. Meta is thus entering competition with Tesla, Figure, and 1X Technologies in a sector still affected by high costs, safety issues, and restrictions on Chinese technologies.
