The Maldives has adopted an innovative law that prohibits smoking for all individuals born after January 1, 2007, thus becoming the only country with a 'generational' ban on tobacco. The initiative, launched by President Mohamed Muizzu, came into effect on November 1 and aims to protect public health and promote a tobacco-free generation. According to the new regulation, the targeted individuals cannot purchase, use, or sell tobacco products, and retailers are required to verify the age of buyers. Additionally, there is a total ban on electronic cigarettes and vaping products for all citizens. Non-compliance with the law incurs significant fines, including 50,000 rufiyaa (approximately $3,200) for selling tobacco to minors. This unique measure comes in the context of similar initiatives in other countries, such as the United Kingdom and New Zealand.
