The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, will unveil a new national military service plan on Thursday, aimed at strengthening the country's armed forces in the face of growing threats from Russia. Macron will emphasize the need to prepare the nation for these threats, especially in the context of the war in Ukraine. Although he announced the option to allow young people to voluntarily join the army, France is not considering reintroducing mandatory military service, which it suspended in 1996.
France intends to allocate 6.5 billion euros for additional military spending over the next two years, with the goal of reaching 64 billion euros annually by 2027. Macron warned that Russia is preparing for a confrontation with European countries, and the new chief of staff, General Fabien Mandon, highlighted the need to be prepared for possible human losses in the event of conflict. While France aims to increase the number of reservists to 100,000 by 2030, other European countries, such as Germany and Belgium, are also strengthening their military capabilities through voluntary recruitment programs.
