Lake Velence, located 40 kilometers west of Budapest, is facing a drastic drop in water levels, which could reach record values this summer, putting the ecosystem and local tourism at risk. Experts warn that without significant rainfall, water levels could drop by up to 30 centimeters, reaching 30 centimeters by the end of summer. Currently, the water level is 56 centimeters, just 3 centimeters above the historic minimum from 2022.

The problem is attributed to climate change and poor management of water resources, including the draining of wetlands. Local businesses, such as those in navigation, are affected, and instructors are moving to Lake Balaton. The Hungarian government has promised measures to improve water quality and rehabilitate the environment, but solutions will take time, according to the mayor of Gardony. Adapting to these climate changes is becoming essential for local communities.
