The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, has decided to pay out of his own funds to keep a personalized necklace received from Donald Trump during his state visit to the United Kingdom. Typically, British leaders return or hand over gifts received, but Starmer opted to keep this gift, while other gifts, such as a pair of cufflinks and a golf club, remained at Downing Street. The details regarding the cost of the necklace have not been disclosed.
Starmer and his wife hosted the Trump couple at the Chequers residence, after meeting with King Charles III. According to the rules, British ministers must declare gifts over £140 and decide whether to keep them or return them. Unlike Starmer, other prime ministers have refused to pay to keep gifts from world leaders, including from Trump.
