Juraj Cintula, 72 years old, was convicted by the Specialized Criminal Court in Banská Bystrica for opening fire on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico on May 15, 2024, during a meeting with supporters in Handlová. Fico was shot in the abdomen and required two surgical interventions. Cintula was arrested immediately after the attack and refused to testify at the trial, stating that his motive was disagreement with the government's policies, including the cancellation of a specialized prosecutor's office for corruption cases and military aid to Ukraine.

Although initially charged with attempted murder, prosecutors changed the charge to terrorism but did not provide further details. Cintula claimed that he did not intend to kill, but only to harm the Prime Minister, expressing relief that Fico survived. The verdict can be appealed by the prosecutors.
