The Magdeburg court sentenced Taleb Jawad al-Abdulmohsen, a 51-year-old Saudi, to life in prison on Friday for the attack carried out on December 20, 2024, when he drove an SUV into a crowd at the Christmas market, causing the death of six people and injuring over 300.

The judges recognized the particularly serious nature of the crime, making early release difficult.

Al-Abdulmohsen, known for his extremist views and sympathy for the far-right AfD party, accused the German authorities of failing to protect Saudi refugees. The prosecutor stated that the attacker acted out of a desire for revenge for a failed trial and unaddressed grievances.

This incident has intensified the debate about immigration in Germany, affecting Chancellor Olaf Scholz's image in the electoral campaign.
