Jodie Foster, a 23-year-old reticulated python from the Chester Zoo, underwent electrochemotherapy after being diagnosed with fibrosarcoma, a malignant tumor that recurred and began to affect the jaw.
After the initial surgical intervention, the tumor reappeared, putting the snake's life in danger. Veterinarians, led by Ian Ashpole, decided to adapt electrochemotherapy, a treatment commonly used in humans, to save the animal. The procedure lasted 90 minutes and included the removal of the tumor and the application of electrical impulses to allow the medication to effectively penetrate the cancer cells.
After a few months, Jodie fully recovered, feeding normally and showing no signs of recurrence. Veterinary specialists intend to publish the details of the procedure to support research in the field. This represents a significant achievement in veterinary medicine, demonstrating the power of collaboration among specialists.
