American Vice President JD Vance accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of making "scandalous" comments about Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, reiterating Budapest's rhetoric that Kiev is using oil deliveries to influence elections in Hungary. Vance made these remarks during his visit to Budapest, where he came to support Orban, who is facing significant challenges ahead of the April 12 elections.
The tense relations between Hungary and Ukraine have become a central topic in the electoral campaign, with Budapest accusing Kiev of deliberately halting the flow of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline. Zelensky stated that the delay in European aid is due to the position of a single EU representative, without naming Orban.
Vance condemned these statements, stating that it is unacceptable for a foreign leader to threaten an allied head of government. He also criticized the press for double standards regarding foreign influence in the elections in the US and Hungary. The German government rejected Vance's accusations, emphasizing that it has no preferences regarding elections in EU member states. Four days before the elections, the Hungarian opposition party Tisza is leading in the polls, having a significant advantage over Orban's governing party Fidesz.
