The Tokyo District Court issued a landmark ruling against Wataru Takeuchi, an entertainment website administrator, sentenced to 18 months of suspended prison for disclosing detailed plots of movies and series. He was fined one million yen (approximately $6,300) for publishing written summaries that, according to the court, can replace the actual viewing of films, thus affecting their commercial value.

The investigation showed that his site, active since 2015, generated substantial advertising revenue, paying independent writers to create summaries that compromised original works. Among the incriminating articles, one focused on the film 'Godzilla Minus One', revealing every plot twist, while another on the anime adaptation 'Overlord', including transcripts of dialogues and images from the series.

The trial highlighted a complex legal issue related to the concept of 'adaptation' in Japanese legislation, which does not allow modifications of original works. This ruling marks a turning point in combating the unauthorized disclosure of content on the internet.
