Ivonne Baki, Ecuadorian diplomat, announced on Tuesday that she is joining the competition for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations, thus becoming the eighth candidate aspiring to replace Antonio Guterres, whose term ends next year.
With extensive experience in leadership positions, including as a minister and ambassador in several countries, Baki has been nominated by Tonga to run. She emphasizes that Guterres' successor must revitalize the UN, an organization in crisis, and respond to current challenges. Baki stated that she is ready to bring new ideas and focus on concrete results.
She also mentioned that she has the support of the United States and has connections with important political leaders, such as Donald Trump and Bill Clinton. The Ambassador of Tonga to the UN highlighted the need for experienced leadership to navigate through a critical period. Denmark, which holds the presidency of the UN Security Council, will organize an informal poll to assess the candidates.
Guterres will conclude his term at the end of the year, after two terms.
