Starting June 1, Italy has implemented a new measure that allows for the reimbursement of highway tolls in the event of delays caused by roadworks or blockages. The consumer protection organization Codacons has announced that drivers will be able to request compensation directly from the highway administrators for the disruptions encountered. This measure is the result of a decision by the Italian Transport Regulatory Authority, adopted last year. In the first phase, reimbursements apply only for delays on routes managed by the same concessionaire, and for sections managed by multiple concessionaires, the measure will come into effect by December 1.

Reimbursements vary depending on the length of the route and the duration of the delay: for routes under 30 km, the reimbursement is automatic; for those between 30 and 50 km, delays must exceed 10 minutes, and for routes longer than 50 km, delays must be at least 15 minutes. In the case of blockages, reimbursements are 50% of the highway toll for delays between 60 and 119 minutes, 75% for 120-179 minutes, and 100% for delays over 180 minutes.
