The Iranian parliament's decision to close the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world's oil transits, comes in response to US air strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Although Iran has refrained from taking action against US economic interests for fear of retaliation, the recent strikes have sparked a possible retaliation in the form of disruption to oil traffic. Tehran reserves the right to defend itself and has said that any US citizen in the region could become a legitimate target.
